Today was a wonderful first day back at school. It is a new year and a new month! We have a new friend in our class...Arthur! This morning we started our morning circle talking about the new year and calendar. Our new patter for January is ABB...circle, diamond, diamond. We also practiced the Sounds Around Town. We reviewed the brother pairs and finished learning the cousins. Today we reviewed the wind and nose cousins. We also learned the lifters (r,l) and the borrows (c, y, qu, x).
Our story today was "White Snow, Bright Snow" by Alvin Tesselt. It talks about a town getting ready for a big snow fall. Once the snow falls it covers the houses, streets and trees. The people shovel their sidewalks and driveways. The kids loved playing in the snow, having snowball fights and make a snowman. After the story we started our snow chart. The kids recorded all the things they knew about snow. We will continue to add to our chart as we learn more this week.
For science we asked the question "Where does ice melt?" We tested ice cubes in the freezer, the classroom, in front of the heater and outside. We made predictions if the ice would melt before we put it around the school. After 30 minutes we went around and looked at our ice in the bowls. The ice melted the most in front of the heater and melted a lot in our classroom. The ice didn't melt outside or in the freezer because it was sooo cold!
For writing today the kids worked on "K" and wrote about something they did during their holiday break in their journals. After writing it was time for lunch! We had just enough time at the end of the say for one snow song. It was great seeing the kids faces this morning...looking forward to another great day tomorrow! Bundle up!
