Ferryboat

Today we started talking about things that go on the water. We needed to paint our boats this morning so they would be ready to decorate during art. With the help of a teacher, we spray painted the boats white. Using spray paint is hard and made our finger muscles tired. During morning circle we practiced skip counting by 2's and 5's and identified numbers 1-39. The kids reviewed the vowel circle and the sliders. Then we read words that ended in -ine. We blended fine, mine, shine, line, pine, and nine.
Our story today was "Ferryboat Ride!" by Anne Rockwell. In the story a little girl's family took a ferry over to the summer island. The ferryboat carried people and cars. While in the water the little girl saw sailboats and sea gulls. When they reached the island the boat docked in the harbor and let everyone off. In the story we learned new vocabulary. Bow is the front, stern is the back, port is the left side and starboard is the right side of the boat. The kids then learned three different ways boats move...with a motor, sail or paddle. The kids then were handed a picture of a boat. They described their boat, decided how it moved, and placed it into the correct category.

We finished our tub boats during art time. The kids added a colorful ribbon around the middle of the boat. Then we needed to add 6 windows. We added two windows on top of the boat where the captain steers the boat. Then the kids added two windows on the port side and two windows on the starboard side. Once the boats dry they should float in a tub of water or bathtub.

For writing today the kids worked on the lowercase letter m. We also wrote a sentence using our new sight words "I like to..."They had to finish the sentence and then write it down in their journal.

The kids loved learning about boats and talked about different ships during lunch today. We ended the day singing songs about boats and other forms of transportation.
