Rocket ship!

This morning we started our new Wednesday centers. The OTA interns helped facilitate three OT centers. The kids searched for letters in our rice bin and tried to spell words. They also used star stickers to make constellations. To practice walking on the moon the kids used moon shoes to bounce around the classroom. We reviewed the letter n during morning circle and talked more about shapes.

Ms. Abby worked on soccer skills today. The kids practiced dribbling the ball and staying in control. Then they passed the ball with a partner and had to trap it with their feet. The last activity was dribbling the ball to the soccer goal and shooting the ball into the goal. It was a great day to play soccer outside!
Our story today was "Hedgie Blasts Off!" by Jan Brett. Hedgie works at Star Lab as a scientist...but he really wants to be an astronaut and go into space. Finally it is his turn to fly in a rocket to space and explore the moon. After reading the story we described the parts of a rocket. Then we brainstormed things we find in space. We talked about the plants, sun, moon, craters, moon rocks, gravity and constellations.

For art the kids made a rocket ship. First they colored the outside of the rocket. Then they flipped over the paper and glued their picture to the inside...they were the astronauts! Next the rolled up the paper to make the rocket body. They added the nose of the rocket and the tail with the engines. The kids drew stars around the rocket since it was up in space.

After eating lunch we sang songs about rocket ships and airplanes. Learning about things that go in the air has been soo much fun...I wonder what we will learn about tomorrow!
