My Family Tree

Today we started the morning with shaving cream. We practiced writing our name, letters and drawing shapes. We talked about the calendar, days of the week and months of the year during morning circle. Outside on the playground the kids played follow the leader and made "ice cream" to sell to their other friends.

Today Ms. Michele came! First, we crawled through a long blue tunnel. The kids loved having a turn and trying to see how fast they could get to the end. Next, the kids laid on scooters and used their arm and feet to move through obstacles. At the end of the obstacle course the kids either picked up jewels with tongs or put pegs in the peg board. Everyone had three turns. For the last activity the kids explored the sensory bin filled with leaves and hidden surprises. The needed to search for red, green and orange objects and sort them by color. Then Ms. Michele gave specific direction, like find one red objects and then find one green object, to each of the kids. It was a great listening activity!
Our story today was "Who's Who in My Family" by Loreen Leedy. The storied talked about kids making family trees at school. All the family trees looked different. The kids had moms, dads, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and great-grandparents on their family trees! After reading the story we talked about who would be on our family tree and talked about which ones were girls and which ones were boys.

For art we made our own family tree. But before we could make our tree we needed to go on leaf walk to find a leaf for each person in our family. After finding our leaves we came back to the classroom and started to glue our leaves on our trees. Once the leaves were in place the kids had to identify the different people in their family and then glue their faces to the leaves. Everyone worked independently to complete their family trees!

We practiced a new song about the people in our family after lunch today. The kids loved it! We will keep practicing until they can sing all the words!
