The Important Thing

Today we were very busy and worked very hard. This  morning we worked on fine motor skills by lacing different shapes and animals.  Everyone was very focused and concentrated on going in and out of the holes.

During morning circle we practiced saying the date..."Today is Friday September 6th, 2013." We practiced the days of the week and counting how many days are in September. Today we started working on our "Everyday Words." We practiced A, My, and Is. We also introduced "Sounds Around Town." We talked about our sound brothers today. The brothers are made the same way but one brother is quiet and the other is noisy. We can feel the noisy brother moving and vibrating our throat! The "lip poppers" were the first pair of brothers we learned. They make the /p/ and /b/ sound by popping our lips.
Today we read "The Important Book" by Margaret Wise Brown. The story talked about what was important about different things. We brainstormed what things we do at school. We learn, paint, talk about the calendar, read, share, make new friends and are nice to our friends. We picked our favorite things about school and decided the important thing about school was learning. The class helped make a poem and each kid took a turn reading it to the class.

The important thing about school is the we learn.
We share.
We make friends.
We paint.
But, the important thing about school is that we learn.

To continue the theme of being important the kids talked about their name being important. For art they each completed their own poem. "The important thing about ______ is his name." Then they drew a picture of themselves or something they like to do.

We ended the day with journals, lunch and music time. Each picked picked their favorite song to sing during music time. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. See you Monday morning!
