Caterpillars

This morning the kids practiced writing sight words on their dry erase board. They also each had a turn completing a puzzle and sounding out CVC words. During morning circle we talked about St. Patrick's Day. We practiced counting by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's with a leprechaun.
Then it was time to review our sounds. Everyone had a turn saying the vowel sounds. Then we sounded out words that had -ap at the bed. We read map, nap, tap, cap, sap, rap and lap.
Our story today was "Charlie the Caterpillar" by Dom DeLuise. In the story Charlie wanted to have friends. But the monkeys, rabbits and mice told him that caterpillars weren't fun. He was sad and decided to take a nap. He made himself a chrysalis and fell asleep. When he woke up he had turned into a butterfly. Not the monkeys, rabbits and mice wanted to be his friends because he was a beautiful butterfly...but he said "No thanks." Instead he became friends with Katie...another caterpillar. After reading the story the kids made a chart describing caterpillars. Caterpillars are bugs, they are little and can be different colors. Caterpillars have 16 legs, a body and 2 eyes. Caterpillar can crawl, eat leaves, spin a chrysalis and turn into a butterfly.

For art the kids made a patterned caterpillar. They each selected two different colors and decided if they wanted to make an AB, AAB, or ABB pattern. They used the beads to make the caterpillars body. After we finished our caterpillars they crawled around the table.

For writing today we practiced lowercase a. The kids also practiced writing their first and last name...the first letter was a capital and then all the other letter were lowercase.

While eating lunch we talked about St. Patrick's Day. After we finished, we watched an Irish jig movie talking about Irish dancing.
