This morning the kids used popsicle sticks to make shapes and letters. Ms. Laura also caught a bug and put it in a container to show the kids. After everyone had a chance to watch it move around we let it go outside. During morning circle we talked about the calendar. The kids also added more words that started with the /b/ sound to our chart! Ms. Abby was sick today so we couldn't have young athletes. But it did stop raining...so we went on a short walk and got some fresh air.
Our story today was "Hey, Little Ant" by Phillip Hoose. In the story a boy found an ant. He was going to step on it with his shoe...until the ant tried to convince him they aren't that different. The little boy looked like a giant next to the ant...but he decided to let him go and not squish him. After reading the story we talked about insects and ants. We learned that insects have 3 body parts...head, thorax and abdomen. The head is where their eyes are and their mouth, their thorax is their chest, and the abdomen is like their stomach. Insects also have 2 antennas, 2 eyes and 6 legs. We also talked about the size of bugs and ants to people....we are big and they are little.
For art the kids made ants. They glued the 3 body parts together to make the head, thorax and abdomen. Then they added 2 antennas to the ant's head. Next they glued 6 legs onto the body. Finally we added 2 eyes and a mouth to the ant. Now he is ready to find some crumbs!
After lunch we ended the day watching insect videos and singing songs. Tomorrow we will start talking about worms...I wonder what will be in the touch and feel pool!
