This morning during morning circle we talked about the calendar and continued our ABAC pattern. We talked about St. Patrick's Day...don't forget to wear green on Monday. The kids identified numbers 10-30 and skip counted by 5's and 10's. We practiced the vowel circle for Sound Around Town. Then the kids read words with -ad at the end. We blended mad, sad, dad, lad, pad, had and bad.
Our story today was "Bob and Otto" by Robert Bruel. In the story Bob the Caterpillar and Otto the Worm looked the same. They liked to play in the dirt and eat leaves. One day Bob wanted to go up into the trees and climb....but Otto wanted to go in the ground and dig. So they went their separate ways. Bob ate lots of leaves in the tree and became very tired...and he fell asleep. Otto was digging tunnels in the ground and he kept digging. When Bob woke up he was a butterfly! He flew down to show Otto. At first Otto was sad because he didn't turn into a butterfly, but Bob helped Otto realize how important he was to the ground and dirt. After reading the story we talked about why worms are important. They help eat the dirt and allow the roots of plant to drink more water!
For writing today we practiced the lower case letter o and c. We also wrote a fact about spiders, insects or worms in our journals.
During science/art today we explored gelatin worms. We placed straws in green gelatin. Then we used a rolling pin to push the "worms" out of the straw. We described what the worms felt like...they were cold and slimy. We pretended they were digging tunnels on our papers!
We ended the day with spider, insect and worm songs! Next week we will start talking about caterpillars.
