This morning we started our art projects. We painted the kid's hands to make a spider. We had to let them dry so they would be ready to finish during art time. During morning circle we talked about the calendar and practiced identifying numbers. The kids also continued the ABAC pattern. We practiced counting by 5's and 10's. During Sounds Around Town the kids each said the vowels in the vowel circle independently. We read -ook words...book, look, took, hook, cook and shook.
Our story today was "The Diary of a Spider" by Doreen Cronin. The story described the life of a spider. Spiders spin sticky webs to help them catch flies and tiny bugs. They can catch the wind and use it to blow them to a new place. They also are afraid of vacuums and people stepping on them. After the story we made a venn diagram comparing spiders and insects. Spiders have eight legs, eight eyes, make webs, can't fly and eat flies and bugs. Insects have six legs, two antennas, two eyes, some can fly and eat leaves and vegetables. They both have bodies, can crawl/climb, and use their legs to eat.
During art we finished our spider web. The next step was to make a web. The kids laced yarn through the wholes around the plate to make the spider web. Then we added 8 eyes to the spider. Our spider has 8 legs and 8 eyes....and likes to crawl on the spider web!
For writing we wrote facts about spiders in our journals. We continued to practice lower case letters too. During lunch the kids shared facts about spiders and insects. They shared stories of encounters either outside or inside the house. We ended the day singing songs about insects and spiders...and watched a spider spin a web! Tomorrow we will go on a bug hunt because it's going to be beautiful outside!
