I See with my Eyes

Today was our last day talking about our five senses. During morning circle we reviewed the calendar, finished our ABC pattern for the month and practiced identifying numbers 1-30 out of order. The kids reviewed the consonant sounds and the vowel circle. Today we sounded out-ot words. We read dot, hot, not, pot, got, rot and shot. The last thing we did in circle was practice our sight words.

Our story today was "The Bear Went Over the Mountain" by Iza Trapini. In the story Bear went on an adventure and used all of his senses. He smelled the grass and flowers. He saw the ducks and rabbits. He heard birds and chipmunks. He touched the frogs and fish. He tasted the sweet honey. After reading the story the kids used the board to describe their five senses. They also shared their favorite sense and used descriptive words.

For science today we used our five senses to describe popcorn. First we observed what it looked like before it was popped. It was yellow, hard and smooth. Then we headed to the kitchen to watch the popcorn pop on the stove. After it was all popped we brought it back to the classroom and described how it looked. It was white, fluffy, smelled like butter and tasted salty. The kids enjoyed having a few pieces of popcorn before lunchtime!

For art the kids made a collage. We took all the body parts we need to use our senses and made a picture. We used eyes, nose, ears, mouth and hands. The kids had to assemble them together to look like a person's face!

We started working on lower case letter in writing today. Our first lowercase letter is l. The kids practiced writing lowercase letters on the ipad. We also wrote about our favorite sense in our journals.

After lunch we ended the day with Show and Tell. The kids loved listening to our friends share! There is a colored folder in each kids book bag. It has letter practice, a senses activity and a short book to practice sounding out words and reading. Please take out all the materials in the folder and place it back into the book bag. I will collect the folders on Monday and return them with work every Friday.

I Taste with my Tongue

This morning we reviewed our five senses. The kids talked about March starting next week and that spring will be here soon. We reviewed words that start with the letter D, S and L.

Our story today was "Delicious!" by Helen Cooper. In the story Duck, Cat and Squirrel go looking for pumpkins to make pumpkin soup. When they can't find any pumpkins they start looking through the recipe book to find a different soup to make. The try fish soup, mushroom soup and beet soup...Cat thinks the soups are scrumptious, Squirrel thinks the soups are nutritious but Duck won't even try the soups! He said he only wanted ORANGE pumpkin soup. So Cat had an idea....they made a orange soup with tomatoes, corn and carrots. When duck saw the soup he thought it was pumpkin soup because it was orange....but when he tasted it he realized it wasn't pumpkin. Even thought it was pumpkin soup, Duck thought it was the best soup ever! We talked about different foods and how they taste. Some foods taste sweet like ice cream, chocolate and donuts. Some food taste sour like lemons and limes. Some foods taste salty like pretzels, chips and crackers.

Ms. Gretchen came for music today. After singing the Hello song the kids got to Shake Their Sillies Out. Next we sang a song about colors and had to follow directions to move to the color words. The kids then helped read the book Chikca Chikca. We used shakes to shake the beat of the book and helped add all the letters to the alphabet tree. Every time we heard Chicka Chicka we moved our shakes in the air and when we hear Boom Boom we tapped the ground. The next song was about an inch worm and flowers. We each had a chance to feel the inch worm noodles and smell a flower. Then it was time to sing the goodbye song.

For science today we made lemonade. First we started with lemons. Everyone had a chance to taste the lemons....they were sour and made us pucker our lips! Then we squeezed the lemons with a juicer to get lots of lemon juice. Then we added water to the juice. The kids all tasted the lemon juice and said it was still sour...we needed to add sugar to make it into lemonade! We had to add a lot of sugar because the lemonade was very sour!

Tomorrow we will talk about our last sense....seeing! Don't forget we will also have Show and Tell!

I Hear with My Ears

This morning the kids reviewed the five senses and described the senses we have already learned...touch and smell. Today we learned about hearing! We talked about the calendar and then practiced sounding out and identifying words that start with L.
Our story today was "The Very Noisy Night" by Diana Hendry. In the story the little mouse heard lots of sounds while he was trying to sleep. He kept asking big mouse if he could get into bed with him...but big mouse kept telling him to go back to bed. Little mouse heard the wind howl, a tree branch tap the window, and owl hoo and a faucet drip. Finally big mouse let him crawl into his bed and they slept through the birds chirping and the alarm clock! After reading the story we discussed quiet noises and loud noises. Quiet noises are the wind, whispers, the piano, waves and birds. Loud noises are thunder, a train whistle, sirens, and yelling. The kids also used their listening ears to play Simon Says. They had to listen very closely to the teachers and follow their directions.

For science today we taped all the kids saying "I love school." Then we sat in a big circle. We listened to each video without look at the screen and had to guess which voice we heard. After we heard each voice the kids guessed which friend they heard. They did a great job at listening and guessing the correct friend. We learned that all our voices sound different. We can tell if mom, dad or our siblings are calling our name just by listening to their voice.

After lunch we ended the day listening to different sounds and having to identify what was making the noise. We listened to transportation sounds, animal sounds and sounds we hear around the house. The kids loved trying to figure out the sound!

I Smell with my Nose

Today we talked about our sense of smell. During morning circle we talked about the calendar. We learned that this is the last week of February. Next week it will be March! We also reviewed the five senses and described the objects we felt yesterday.

Ms. Michelle came today. First we completed an obstacle course. The kids had to walk across the zig-zag balance beam. Then they jumped through the rope ladder. Finally they picked up a ball, jumped on 5 stars and then tossed the ball in a basket. After the kids completed their turn they went over to the alphabet train. They had to follow directions to find a letter, letter sound or the letter that is at the beginning of a word. Next we had parachute time. Ms. Michelle put lots of balls in the parachute and we made them pop high into the air. Then the kid had a turn running under the parachute.
Our story today was "What's that Awful Smell" by Heather Tekavec. Dog, Duck, Sheep, and the other animals want to find out what is making the awful smell in the barn. Finally they decide that the terrible stink is coming from a baby piglet. The animals do everything they can to rid the pig of his smell. They cover him in hay, wash him in mud, decorate him with flowers, and rub strawberries all over him. But nothing seems to work. Then Cat comes over to see what they are doing...hoping his friends didn't find his sandwich he was saving for dinner. Cat left his onion and tuna fish sandwich in the barn. The animals learned that the piglet didn't smell...it was Cat's sandwich! After reading the story we made a list of good smell and a list of stinky, icky smells. We liked to smell cookies, flowers, and candles. We don't like the smell of fish, garbage and rotten food.

For science today the kids used their noses to smell and guessed what was inside six different cups. We passed around the cups covered with foil with holes in the top. We couldn't see what was inside....we could only smell it. After we smelled each cup the kids predicted what was inside and then we glued the correct picture to match the smell in our chart. We smelled onion, cinnamon, chocolate, vanilla ice cream, lemon and coffee. The kids favorite was the vanilla ice cream smell.

For art we created smelly flowers to decorate our bulletin board outside. The kids had a piece of paper with a stem drawn. First we handed out a green colored paint that smelled like limes. The kids used the green paint to color the stem green. Then we used yellow paint that smelled like lemonade to make the center of the flower. The kids each painted a big yellow circle in the middle of the paper. Next we used purple paint that smelled like grapes to make the petals. We made big purple circles around the yellow circle to create the petals. After we were finished the room smelled like fruit and our flowers smelled great! We will let the flowers dry so we can use them for our spring board in the hallway!

Today was a busy day using our nose to smell. There are so many wonderful things we can smell....and then there are stinky things we can smell too! Tomorrow we will listen with our ears to see what we can hear!

I Touch with my Hands

This week we are learning about our five senses. During morning circle we discussed the calendar and identified numbers 1-30. The kids continued the ABC pattern. We also practiced skip counting by 10's and 5's. The class practiced the consonant and vowel sounds and then read words with -all in them. We sounded out fall, ball, tall, mall, and call.
The Five Senses Bockol, Leslie/ Phillips, Jillian (ILT) 1 of 1
Our story today was "The Five Senses" by Leslie & Philip Bockol. In the story the little girl explore her surround with her senses. After the story we talked about how we use our five senses. We smell with our nose, touch with our hands, hear with our ears, taste with our mouth and see with our eyes. The kids each took a turn putting their hands in the mystery box. Using their hands they felt different objects and had to guess what was inside the box. Then as a class we made a Touch and Feel book, which described what objects feel like....bumpy, smooth, soft, rough and hard.

For art the kids identify what objects felt like with the words from our Touch and Feel book. We decided that foil was smooth, a popsicle stick was hard, sand paper was rough, a cotton ball was soft and cardboard was bumpy. After we glued the objects by the correct words we thought of other things that fit in each category. Our shirts were soft and the table was hard.

During writing today we described our sense of touch in our journals. The kids also practiced writing numbers 1-10. After lunch we sang songs about things we can feel with our hands. Tomorrow we will learn about our sense of smell!
