Today we learned about another feeling....angry. During morning circle we talked about the days of the week and month of the year. Then we talked about the letter s. We identified words that start with the /s/ sound and sounded out CVC words that start with s.
Our story today was "When Sophie Gets Angry- Really, Really Angry" by Molly Bang. In the story Sophie got very angry when her sister took her gorilla. She stomped her feet, got red and screamed very loud. She felt she was going to explore like a volcano. When Sophie gets angry she run outside...then she cries. She climbed up a tree to calm down...taking deep breaths and listening to the waves in the water. When she was calm she walked back to her house. After reading the story we talked about things that make us angry. We get angry when we don't have a turn, friends don't share and someone pushes us. When we are angry our face gets red, we make fists, we scream, shout and stomp our feet.
To show how we feel when we are angry we did a science experiment. We pretended a bottle of soda was a person....and that person was really, really angry! That person was so angry they were going to explode. When we dropped the mentos into the soda the bottle exploded! Then after a few seconds the bottle calmed down and no more soda came out the top.
When we came back inside we talked about ways to calm down when we are really angry. We can count to 10, take deep breaths, exercise, say I'm sorry, or sing a song. Sometimes we need to ask for a minute so we can calm ourselves down and talk about how we are feeling. The class made a calm jar together. When we are really angry we can shake the calm jar. Inside the jar the glitter spins round and round until it settles on the bottom of the jar. We can take the time to calm ourselves down while the glitter falls to the bottom of the jar...and now we are no longer angry.
After lunch we ended the day talking about our feelings and telling people how we feel. It is important to find ways to calm down when we are angry...because we don't want to be angry forever.
