Watch out Germs!

Wow...the kids loved learning about germs this week! During our morning circle we talked about our new month...February. The kids also started our new pattern....ABC! We practiced Sounds Around Town and finished learning the vowel circle...the open and round vowels. The kids then each pulled a letter from the mystery box to make words that ended with -op.

Our story today was "Germs Make Me Sick!" by Melvin Berger. Most of the time you feel fine, but sometimes you get sick. Germs are all around you, but they are too small for you to see. Many germs are harmless, but two kinds, viruses and bacteria, can make you sick. Our story helped us learn about germs, how they can make us sick, and how out body works to fight them off and keep us healthy. The key vocabulary words in our story were microscope, bacteria (live everywhere), virus (only live in things that are alive), and multiply. After reading the story we made a chart describing the different things we learned about germs. They kids were so excited to talk about germs!

For science today we investigated where we think germs are in our school. We swabbed the table, door knob, a mouth, a book, the kitchen sink, and a plant. We put the germs onto special cups. We placed the cups in a dark, warm area to see which cup grows the most germs. The kids all voted and made predictions on which cup will have the most germs.

The kids also loved the germ videos....here are some of our favorites!
