Don't be Worried

Today we continued talking about our feelings and learned about being worried. During morning circle we talked about the calendar and practiced our letters of the week...D and S.
Our story today was "Wembley Worried" by Kevin Henkes. In the story Wembley worried about everything. She worried about the dark, a tree falling on her, the swings breaking and going to a new school. Her parents told her not to worry and that everything would be alright. When she started her new school the teacher introduced her to a new friend. When playing with her new friend she wasn't as worried and enjoyed being at school. After reading the story the kids defined what worried meant. They also talked about things that worried Wembley in the story and things that worry them.

Ms. Gretchen was back today for music. The kids were so excited to see her! We sang If You're Happy And You Know It and had to follow the directions in the song. Then we sang a song about sharing. The kids practiced spelling SHARE while clapping and singing along to the song. Ms. Gretchen had the kids invite each other to skip around the circle and hold a shaker..by the end all the kids were skipping around the circle. We practiced passing shakes to the right and left when we sang the Pass song. It was wonderful having music class again!

For science today we talked about how it feels when people say mean, cold, prickly words to you. On the outside we might not look hurt, but on the inside our feelings have been hurt. We looked at two apples. They looked the same on the outside. Then we passed one apple around and hit it on the table and used mean words. When we cut the apple open it was bruised and mushy on the inside...even though you couldn't tell from the outside. Then we passed the apple around again and this time said nice words to make it feel better. We said "I'm Sorry," "Feel Better," "Be Happy," "I Love You," and "I'm Your Friend." Our friends also hugged, patted and kissed the apple.

For art we made signs to remember the friendly nice words we should use with our friends. The kids decided to make a sign that said Friends, Be Happy or Love You. The kids were give letters cut out of magazines. They used a model sign to decided which order the letters should be glued down. It was great to see them identify the letters, sound out the words and share them with their friends!

Tomorrow will be our last day talking about feelings. This week has been great talking about how we feel and what makes us mad, sad, scared and most importantly HAPPY!
