Our Feelings

This morning we talked about the calendar. We continued our ABC pattern. The kids also counted to 100 by 10's. We shared our birthdays with our friends...and Jack M. is turning 5 this Sunday! The kids reviewed Sounds Around Town and practiced the vowel circle. The kids sounded out words that ended with -id. We read did, mid, rid, hid, bid, and kid. For writing today the kids wrote about their feelings in their journals, practiced writing 4, 5, and 6 and worked on writing numbers on the ipad.
Our story today was "Shy Charles" by Rosemary Wells. Charles is a shy mouse. He doesn't like to talk, and he's perfectly happy playing by himself. But his parents are not happy. "It's time he played football or joined the ballet", says Charles's father. So off Charles goes to ballet class, where he curls up and pretends to be asleep. Football proves even less successful. Then Charles had a babysitter. When the babysitter fell down the stairs he helped her up, got her a blanket and coco and called the doctor. His parents were so proud that he wasn't shy and helped out! After reading the story the kids completed a chart that described how we act when we are shy, how we feel when we are shy and what makes us shy.

For science we made stress balls. We followed directions and mixed together flour, salt and oil. Then we slowly mixed in water. The kids used their hands to mix the dough together. The dough is hard to squeeze...so when we are angry or mad we can squeeze the dough to help us calm down. While squeezing the stress ball we shared things that make us angry or mad and ways to calm down. The kids each took home the stress ball.

After lunch we experimented with mood rings. The kids each put on their mood ring. We waited for about a minute and then looked to see what color it turned. Some of the rings were dark blue which meant they were relaxed and happy, some rings were pink which meant they were very happy and curious and some of the rings were blue-green which meant they were upbeat and relaxed. They kids loved seeing what color their friend's ring turned.

Have a great weekend everyone. Enjoy the warmer weather. Next week we will talk about our five senses!
