Cows Have Udders

This morning there were all different animals in the touch and feel pool. The kids had to decide whether the animal belonged on the farm or not on the farm. Then we described the animals we have in our hands. During morning circle we talked about the month of October! The kids were all excited for Halloween but they will have to wait until the last day of the month.

Ms. Michele came today! First we went on a scavenger hunt and looked for different animals. Each kids took a turn being the leader and showed everyone how to be that animal. We crawled like a ladybug, leaped like a frog, galloped like a unicorn and pounced like a tiger. Then the kids found letters in baby powder. If felt soft and smelled good! The last activity was finger fun centers. The kids found objects in putty, feed the fish, put beans in the jar, picked up popcorn and put straws in a container. It was a blast!

Our story today was "Big Red Barn" by Margaret Wise Brown. In the barnyard there are roosters and cows, horses and goats, and a pink piglet who was learning to oink. They all lived in the barn together. On the farm the animals ate, played and went to sleep. After reading the story we sorted animals that lived on the farm and animals that do not live on the farm. If they didn't live on the farm the kids told us where they should live. Chickens, pigs, sheep, dogs, horses and cows live on farm. Monkeys, tigers, lions, zebras, and alligators do not live on a farm.

For science today we learned about cows. Cows can be brown or black. We talked about the different parts of a cow. We also learned that cows have udders...which is where we get our milk! The farmer milks the cow's udders to get milk for us to drink. We watched a video explaining how to milk a cow. Then we pretended to milk a cow at school. We used our hands to squeeze and pull down on the udder until the "milk" came out!

We had so much fun talked about farm animals. Our favorite song today was about the animals on the farm. The end of the song is funny...they tried to trick us into thinking elephants live on the farm....but they don't!
