During morning circle we talked about the calendar and practiced saying the date in the correct order independently. We also practiced reading the days of the week and months of the year out of order. For writing centers we wrote in our journals, practiced writing the letter "D" and wrote sight words on the iPad.
Our story today was "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves" by Lucille Colandro. Through the story, the old lady swallows a shirt, a pumpkin, a pole, some pants, a rope, and some hay. Then the old lady sneezes. All the things she has swallowed fly out of her mouth accompanied by a big “ACHOO!” When all those strange things fly out of her moth they come together to make a scarecrow.
We had our own Old Lady and the kids each retold the story and fed her a shirt, a pumpkin, a pole, some pants, a rope, and some hay. I think their favorite part was the sneeze at the end!
For science today we found leaves in the courtyard. We sorted them by color..we found green, brown and orange leaves. Then we made leaf rubbings to look at the different shapes of the leaves. We used our leaves for art. We made leaf rubbings in the Old Lady's stomach so it looked like she ate some leaves.
Before eating lunch we practiced Sounds Around Town and our sight words. We are working on lip poppers (p, b), tip tappers (t, d), throat scrappers (k, g), lip coolers (f, v) and tongue coolers (th). We used the mirror to help us make the lip coolers...it reminded us to bite our bottom lip and show our top front teeth.
