Seeds

This morning we started talking about seeds and planting. The kids sorted seeds into containers. We had sunflower seeds, corn seeds, lima beans and pinto beans. The seeds were brow, black/white, yellow and white. They were different shapes and they each felt different...but they were all seeds.

During morning circle we talked about the calendar. The kids practiced counting to 50. We continued our ABAB pattern. We learned 3 new "everyday" words...white, brown and black. Then we reviewed Sounds Around Town. We practiced the lip poppers, tip tappers, throat scrapers, lip coolers and then we learned the tongue coolers. Theses sound brothers are special because they are twins...they look the same but make a quiet and noisy sounds. We stick our tongue between our teeth and blow over our tongue to make the /th/ sound.
Our story today was "How a Seed Grows" by Helene Jordan. In our story we learned a seed is a tiny plant. Given soil, water, and sunlight, the seed will begin to grow. As the seed grows, it becomes a flower, a vegetable, or maybe even a tree. After reading the story be made a flow chart of the steps to planting the seed. Once the chart was complete the kids each told the class how to plant a seed to recall the steps.

For art the kids made a seed mosaic. They used green, orange and blue seeds to make a picture of a plant. They each decided what color they wanted to make the pot and used the seed to fill the shape in. Then they filled in the stem and leaves of the plant with green seeds. They worked very carefully so their entire picture was covered in seeds.

Before lunch we completed our writing centers. The kids practiced the letter "S", wrote in their journals and practiced the letters with the magnetic strip. It was a busy day and the rain didn't slow us down!
