Brush Your Teeth

Today we started talking about the dentist. The kids were very interested in why we go to the dentist and what the dentist does. During morning circle we practiced the days of the week and months of the year. We continued our AAB pattern on the calendar. The kids practiced reading our everyday words. Then we reviewed the Sounds Around Town. We learned a new sound brother pair...Fat Pushed Air. We made this sound the same way as /sh/ but then pushed the air out quickly to make /ch/ and /j/.

Today we read "Doctor De Soto" by William Steig. Doctor De Soto was a great dentist. He helped animals with toothaches. His was such a good dentist his patients never felt any pain. Since he's a mouse, Doctor De Soto refuses to treat "dangerous" animals--that is, animals who have a taste for mice. But one day a fox shows up and begs for relief from the tooth that was killing him. Doctor De Soto decided to help the fox. To make sure the fox didn't eat him he used a special solution and glued his mouth together! After reading the story the kids answered "wh" question in complete sentences about important information in the story.

For science today we learned about the importance of brushing your teeth! We asked what happens to our teeth when we drink water or soda. The kids make predictions about whether our teeth stay white or turn brown. We pretended an egg was a "tooth" and put one in a cup of water and one in a cup of soda. The egg in the water stayed white and the egg in the soda turned brown. To clean off our "tooth" the kids used a toothbrush and toothpaste. It is very important to brush our teeth in the morning and at night to help keep our teeth healthy and white!

For writing today we practiced writing our first and last names, practiced the letter J and wrote sight words on the iPad. After eating lunch we watch videos and sang songs about brushing your teeth. Tomorrow we have a very special visitor!
