Taking Care of our Pets

This morning the kids played memory and a rhyming Go Fish game. While playing memory they described the different animals. The group playing Go Fish talked about rhyming words and finding words that sound the same to get a match.

During morning circle we talked about the calendar. We practiced identifying the first, second and last day of the week and month of the year. We also talked about yesterday, today and tomorrow. The kids helped continue our AAB pattern. Next we read our sight words. At the end of school we reviewed our Sound Brother pairs. We talked about how to make the sounds, what letter makes each sound and listed words that start with the different sounds. The kids also wrote in the journals and practiced writing the letter "X" before going outside.

Our story today was "The Perfect Pet" by Carol Chataway. Three little pigs want a dog more than anything else in the world. The problem is they can't decide what sort to get. So Mr. Pinkerton at the pet shop suggests they take a dog or two home to try. But the first dog is AWFUL! The second is DREADFUL! And the third is TERRIBLE! All the pigs want is a pet that is small, clever, playful, friendly, warm, gentle, loving -- and who doesn't bark, dig, chew, lick, howl, wander or dribble. Mr. Pinkerton finally finds the perfect pet...a cat. After reading the story we recalled the important events in the story. We remembered the different reasons the pigs did not like the dogs they took home.

For art today we made a cat. The kids made the cats face, body and tail. We described how cats look. Cats have four legs, a tail, fur, they meow, and they have whiskers.

The kids enjoyed watching everyone share their special object for Show and Tell. They listened very carefully and asked great questions! After lunch the kids had one more chance to practice their vet skills. They each had a dog and gave it a 10 point check up. The kids looked in the dog's ears, eyes and mouth. They gave the dogs shots and took them for walks. Next week we will learn about two more community helpers!
