Police Officers!

This morning we talked about our special visitor coming to school...Officer Wade. He is a police officer in our community. We made a list of things we might see during our visit. The kids were excited to look for his badge, police car and siren.

Officer Wade met us outside in the parking lot. He was wearing his police uniform and police hat. The uniform was blue and he had two shiny badges. He talked about his special belt that had a gun, special police radio and handcuffs. Then Officer Wade let us look at his police car! We walked around and looked at the different numbers and the letters that spelled the word 'police' on the front. Then the kids got a chance to sit in the back of the police car with their friends. At the end Officer Wade turned on the blue, white and orange lights and turned on the siren. He gave the kids a police badge, coloring book and crayons. We loved learning about the police with Officer Wade.
Our story today was "Police. Hurrying! Helping! Saving!" by Patricia Hubbell. In the story the police rush off to start their day. Who know what jobs will come their way! Police keep us safe and protect us. They direct traffic, give directions, and provide first aid. The police are our friends and they help keep us safe. After reading the story we talked about all the things we learned while talking to Officer Wade and then added them to the list. We talked about why police have handcuffs, traffic vest, lights and a siren.

For art today the kids made their own police badge...just like Officer Wade's! They made their badge shiny and blue...just like police uniforms! We also talked about cars having a license plate with lots of numbers and letters. The kids each made a license plate with their name on it to take home.

It was so much fun learning about the police and how they help us. Tomorrow we will start learning about firefighters. I can't wait to go visit the fire station!
