Stop, Drop and Roll

This morning we worked on spinning the spinners and taking turns while playing our board games. During morning circle we talked about the calendar and continued our AAB pattern. Only one more week until we start our new December pattern. We also practiced our sound brother pairs. After reviewing all sounds the kids selected a letter from the mystery box. They said the letter name, letter sound and a word that started with the letter. For writing we worked on the letter V today, wrote in our journals and practiced writing sight words on the iPad.

Our story today was "Big Frank's Fire Truck" by Leslie McGuire. In the story Big Frank and the rest of the firefighters race to the scene of an accident, inspect the local grocery store, demonstrate fire safety at a School, and battle a raging forest fire! Firefighters have very busy days! After reading the story we sorted objects that the police, firefighters or both use when helping the community.

For our first science activity we talked about stop, drop and roll. If there is ever a fire in our house and our clothes catch on fire we need to know how to put it out. We practiced stopping, dropping and rolling. The kids had "fire" on their clothes and they rolled on the ground until it was out.

Then we talked about how fire makes things change. We described what a piece of paper looked like..it is white, in one piece and we can write on it. Then I lit the paper on fire and we watched it burn and smoke. After the fire went out we looked at the burnt paper. It turned into ash and was gray and in little pieces. We talked about how only grown ups are allowed to use fire...it can be very dangerous and hot!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Next week will be a short week and we will be learning all about Thanksgiving!
